My mega-cute coworker, whom I have a crush on, and whom has a boyfriend, was wearing the Hunger Games Mockingjay pin, and I was too much of a pussy to say anything about it.
The Beauty of Asymmetry
There are various differences between physical & esports: a focus on physical versus mental fitness, training on a field versus on a computer, & performing in a stadium versus in a booth. There are also various factors which physical sports & electronic sports, or esports, share: salaried professionals, televised events with advertisements, & live crowds of thousands, to name a few.
But, I’d say the most beautiful & interesting similarity between many regular sports & esports is in the asymmetry.
There’s a large scar on the back of my right hand, near the wrist. It’s over an inch long, and perhaps a third of an inch wide. I think most of my friends aren’t aware I have this scar, except those whom I’ve pointed it out to, in conversation. And, I think, It’s because I don’t pay attention to it. The way I got this scar has no meaning whatsoever. I joke about having fought bears or been stabbed by ninjas, because the truth is a story less impressive than the flesh. Nothing good came from my having this scar. Nothing particularly bad, either, aside from the scar itself. Simply nothing. I only remembered about it today because I was daydreaming - as usual - while gazing at my right hand absentmindedly. I can’t remember the last time I had thought about it. I’ll presumably always have it.
I can’t return to the way things were. Instead, I can make the most of the way things are, and try to make the best of the way things will be.
My StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm Campaign Complete Playthrough, and Impressions
The vendetta against Mengsk began in 1998 with his betrayal of Sarah Kerrigan on Tarsonis. Finally, in 2013, I have consummated her revenge.
I’ve completed the SC2: HotS Campaign on Normal Difficulty in four unedited & recorded-live sessions, totaling 11 hours. All Mission Achievements on Normal have been accomplished.
In brief, my impressions of the Campaign with respect to the Wings of Liberty Campaign are positive. Heart of the Swarm brings improved campaign elements such as unit upgrades, more exciting, fun, & varied missions, slightly better plot & dialogue, & very satisfying gameplay. I’d rate the WoL campaign with a 7/10, & HotS with an 8/10. Here’s to hoping LotV will deliver a 9/10, minimum.
It’s been a lot of fun. We have a new era of StarCraft, and of eSports, to look forward to, until we must, in the end, venture with Zeratul into the Void, and beyond.
I want to buy a pack of rabid hamsters, train them to use butter knives, and them pit them against each other in gladiator combat. Don’t worry, I’d only buy hamsters with violent criminal records, not innocent ones. I’ll cross check the Hamster Bureau of Investigation. I can get my old Tech Deck skate parks & Beyblade arenas for the butter-knife-equipped-gladiator-hamsters to engage in mortal combat. I’ll put up a Kickstarter for this shortly. Get a cheap video camera and stream this online. Institute a basic betting system for profit. I guess I can quit my day jobs now, I’m pretty sure this is foolproof guys
An Elaborate, If Ill-Fitted, Construct
Self-Pitying Lament of the Unrequited
He pointed to Uresh.
“You can divide infinity an infinite number of times, and the resulting pieces will still be infinitely large,” Uresh said in his odd Lenatti accent. “But if you divide a non-infinite number an infinite number of times the resulting pieces are non-infinitely small. Since they are non-infinitely small, but there are an infinte number of them, if you add them back together, their sum is infinite. This implies that any number is, in fact, infinite.
“Wow,” Elodin said, after a long pause. He leveled a serious finger at the Lenatti man. “Uresh. Your next assignment is to have sex. If you do not know how to do this, see me after class.”
an excerpt from The Wise Man’s Fear, by Patrick Rothfuss.
My life’s greatest irony is that I have a degree in English and a foot in my mouth whenever I talk to women. I can do the acquaintances’ and the lovers’ interactions just fine, but the part in-between is completely out of my depth. Want me to talk about sex jokes in Shakespeare, or strategy in StarCraft? I can do that. Want me to talk about shit you want to hear? Bluescreen.
Book of Flash
In the beginning NesTea created the heaven and the GSL.
And the GSL was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the scene. And the Spirit of NesTea moved upon the face of the creep.
And NesTea said, Let there be Flash: and there was Flash.
And NesTea saw Flash, and Flash was good.
[SC2] StarCraft As E-Sport, Part 2: The State of StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty
In a continuation from the first post, which was about the history of StarCraft, I’ll now delve into the state of StarCraft 2, in terms of its professional scene, and its community at large. I’ll continue to write to a reader who has not long been involved in the e-sports or StarCraft scene.
[SC2] StarCraft As E-Sport, Part 1: What Are E-Sports?
Most posts I write tagged [SC2] are intended for savvy audiences; however, here I write also to those who know nothing about StarCraft 2, about its following culture, or what “e-sports” are. I believe e-sports is or will become important to our whole Internet generation. If you have any interest in the Internet, video games, or even regular, physical sports, I urge you to have a read.
There will be a following post about the current state of StarCraft 2 as an e-sport. But first, let’s delve into the history of e-sports from the perspective of StarCraft 1.
Not Knowing, or, The Legend of Mew
I think this will be the first “old man” post that I’ll write. By that I mean, a post that can start with “Back in my day…” but you’ll get what I mean, shortly.
So, here and now, where I live in 2012, it is common for the majority of people to have Internet access from their smartphones. More than half the people I know are capable of looking anything up at any time. I can know whatever I want, with a couple seconds and an inquisitive finger on a touchscreen.
First impressions; no spoilers.
[SC2] [Suggestion] Change Protoss Warp-In Times
The balance team seems to be at odds against many in the community about Protoss Warp Gates - in their supposed strengths and weaknesses, and in their dangers or shortcomings. I’d like to suggest for your consideration a change to the Warp-In and cooldown times of Warp Gates that would have some interesting and potentially beneficial side effects. The Train times, versus Warp-In cooldowns, of Gateway / Warp Gate Units are as follows:
